Software Engineer

New York, NY

What we’re building

More than $100 billion in family and philanthropic giving capacity is created each year. But flaws in the current process impose over a billion in annual costs in order to access it. We are building the first product for wealth managers to automate the complex, and inefficient estate planning process. Our platform will:

  • Streamline complex workflows
Today, the collaboration required to execute Trust & Estate plans is done mostly offline through emails, spreadsheets, and paper documents - creating friction for everyone involved.

We’re reimagining workflow tools to increase transparency, and drive efficiency in the process.

  • Model data-rich visualizations
Complex trust and estate plans add tremendous value for clients but their complexity makes it hard to visualize. As a result, advisors may miss opportunities to demonstrate their work.

You’ll have the opportunity to automate complex financial modeling, and visualize the full results of planning decisions.

  • Personalize Recommendations
By capturing personal preferences, tax laws, and asset performance we can surface the optimal strategies.

With enough data, we will ultimately build an automated model to further optimize outcomes.

Who we are

The founding team is set up to succeed with deep industry experience, an unparalleled network, and top tier product and engineering leadership.

David Barnard, founder and CEO, brings over two decades of leadership experience from AllianceBernstein, a global money management firm, where he was head of the Private Wealth group overseeing more than $100 billion in client assets.

CPO David St. Geme and CTO Ian Lyons were both early employees at Blend, building and scaling a complex mortgage lending platform and growing it to an IPO (NYSE: BLND), with more than 300 customers and more than $5 billion per day in processed loans.

Luminary is backed by Joe Lonsdale (founder of Addepar and Palantir) and the team at 8VC, experienced and well-connected investors in the wealth tech space.

What you’ll do

As a member of the founding engineering team, you’ll have meaningful ownership over the product development process.

More specifically, you’ll:

  • Decide on the tech stack, data model, and developer experience
  • Work closely with our CEO, Head of Product, and Head of Engineering to build and launch an MVP
  • Interact directly with customers to understand their needs and solve their problems
  • Iterate quickly with the Luminary team to create a generational business that democratizes wealth tech

Who you are

You’re a resourceful engineer with a startup mindset and you’re motivated to build an industry-leading product from the ground up alongside a small, talented, high-trust team. Ideally, you’re comfortable working across the stack from infrastructure to the frontend, and you thrive in an environment of autonomy and ownership.

Because the stage of the company requires flexibility, we don’t have a strict set of skills for this role. Here are things that would be useful, although we certainly don’t expect you to have all of these!

  • Software engineering experience at a high-performing company or team
  • Experience with React and Typescript
  • Experience with AWS and Terraform
  • Experience with Go and Postgres or a similar database technology
  • Experience with cloud-based web applications and complex data models
